Col. Augustine Akobundu was born on the 10th of March.  He is an indigene of Oloko in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. He had his early education in Enugu and Umuahia.
He thereafter attended the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he obtained an NDA Certificate in Education, he also has a Diploma in Telecom/Electronic Engineering from the University of Ife and the Nigerian Army School of Signals/Unife Training Project at lle-lfe. He also holds a Diploma in French from  Alliance Françoise in Lagos.

Augustine Akobundu enlisted into the Officer Cadet of 22 Regular Combatant Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna in 1977.
He has attended several Professional and Military Courses in Army School of Signals and rose to the position of Chief Instructor in the Nigerian Army School of Signals, Combat Communication Wing.
He was once an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the then Col. Christ Garuba and also served as Military Technical Assistant to the pioneer Bayelsa State Military Administrator on Telecommunication matters.
After retirement from service in 2000 as Lieutenant Colonel he ventured into business as Group Chairman of Nostro Group of Companies.
He holds several awards and publications to his credit. Augustine Akobundu is happily married with children, He is a passionate Philanthropist who has as his hobbies reading, writing and listening to classical music.
He was appointed Minister of State for Defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
