Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has said that he believed the political war between the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his estranged godfather and serving minister, Nyesom Wike, will make the former emerge as a “General” in politics.

Jonathan spoke at an exhibition attended by the governor and other dignitaries, held at Nihi Community in Etche Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

Speaking, Jonathan said, “I know you are passing through challenges, and at occasions like these, I try to keep quiet. I don’t like to say certain things.”

In his remarks, Jonathan pleaded with the people of Rivers State to collectively ensure that they continue to support Fubara in order to ensure peace and development in the state.

He urged Fubara not to be perturbed by the political antagonism against his administration but to remain dedicated to the obligations of governance without being distracted, saying that his current political experience was turning him into a better leader.

This is your first time holding a top political office, and you will face many challenges. But remember, no one becomes a General without fighting wars.

The challenges you’re encountering now are shaping you to be a General in politics. With your dedication and the support I’ve witnessed from the people of Rivers State, God will guide you through.”

Jonathan highlighted the crucial role of Rivers State and warned that any negative impact on it would have long-term repercussions for the entire country.

We desire a peaceful Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta. I always make it clear that any serious disturbance in Rivers State will lead to a crisis in the Niger Delta, which will harm our national economy.

He said, “We need a peaceful Rivers State. We want the governor to be allowed to carry out his duties calmly. After his tenure, another will take over.

“In political office, there are defined tenures. We don’t need to fight over political positions. Let those in office do their work, and when their time is up, other things will unfold.”

Governor Fubara expressed gratitude for the recognition and the chieftaincy title of “Dike Oha 1 of Etche Land”  vowing that his administration would continue to provide essential projects and social services to improve the lives of the people.

Fubara has been in a political crisis with his predecessor, Wike, since last year.
The conflict led to an impeachment attempt against Fubara and resulted in a factionalised House of Assembly, as well as several instances of violence.
