Achievements of Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s tremendous efforts over the state cannot be overlooked. He has proven himself to be one of the few public officials who are still true and honest to the ideals of good governance and to a commitment to focus on their mandates, irrespective of overriding efforts of praise singers. The governor who is currently in his second time in office has recorded notable achievements that have garnered the attention of the public. He has since graced pages of many of our nation’s dailies for his outstanding performance. This article highlights 10 major achievements of Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

The Re-opening of Third Mainland Bridge

The renowned Third Mainland Bridge experienced major reconstruction and repair works under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The newly renovated Third Mainland Bridge reopened on Thursday, April 4, 2024 (today). Over recent months, the Third Mainland Bridge has undergone intermittent closures, ranging from days to weeks, to facilitate urgent repairs across various sections. These closures have necessitated the use of alternate routes by motorists during the repair periods. The Third Mainland is Africa’s second-largest bridge, extending nearly 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to link Lagos Island, the business heart of the city, with the mainland where most people live. It was built in 1990 in Nigeria’s economic engine.

Management of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the State

The valiant performance of the Lagos state Governor on the efforts deployed in managing the outbreak of covid 19 in the State is one of the most talked about. He commenced the administration of the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine in 183 designated centres.  He activated one Oxygen Plant at Yaba for COVID-19.  20 Local Government Area (LGA) Based Sample Collection Sites were activated as part of efforts to tackle the third wave of Coronavirus. 10 COVID-19 Oxygen Treatment and Sample Collection Centres were also opened. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was able to lead a formidable and efficient professional team which saw to the effective management of the situation, thereby curtailing what would have been a devastating pandemic in the state.

Security/Emergency Management

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed the interest of the government in the security of Lagos state. He donated security equipment worth billions of naira to the police:  180 patrol vehicles, 200 patrol motorcycles, 4-high capacity troupe carriers, 2 anti-riot canon vehicles,armored personnel carriers, and,1000 security gadgets. He also commissioned the Emergency Security Regional Centre, Epe, and employed 100 fire-fighters.

Infrastructural Development

More than 51 major infrastructural projects such as the Pent Cinema flyover, ramp and road networks, Lagos-Ogun Boundary roads Phase II, Lekki Oniru Traffic Circulation Projects, the network of roads in Ojokoro, Somolu, and Ikoyi, among others. His administration also constructed and rehabilitated 301 inner roads in the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). It also commissioned the Oshodi-Abule Egba BRT lane. The Eleko junction to Epe concrete pavement road construction is ongoing. These road projects were executed to bring comfort and success to the people of Lagos.

Environmental sector

To secure a clean Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu donated 30 units of 12-cubic meter trucks, 60 units of 24-cubic meter trucks, and 12 hook loaders which is expected to complement over 850 PSP compactor trucks to enhance service delivery in under-served communities across the State. 38 vehicles were impounded in the Obalende axis, and 42 people were arrested at Odo Street, Ojo Street, Obalende Road, Passport Road, and Kef fi Road while Outer Marina, Mcwean Bridge, Muson Centre, Flag Staff House, Police AIG Zone 2 Office Road, Onikan amongst others have been cleaned.  LAWMA Academy was inaugurated to promote environmental cleanliness.

Construction & Rehabilitation of Public School

One of the major achievements of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu is his active involvement in the educational sector. His input in education cut across the different stages of education To encourage the teachers, he gave brand new SUVs to 13 outstanding teachers and school administrators on Wednesday, June 28, 2022. He renovated and digitized 243 public secondary school libraries, trained 18,000 teachers under the Eko-Excel program, and equipped 450,000 pupils with e-learning devices to improve the quality of education and make it more accessible.

Agriculture

Through the Agricultural Value Chains Enterprise Activation Programme, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has trained many youths in various agricultural practices which has gone a long way to giving them a means of livelihood and sustenance. He has seen to the training of over 12,000 women, thousands of youths in the State have been empowered across several value chains.

 the integrated mass transportation initiative has also recorded huge progress with the successful completion of the elevated seas crossing track of the Blue Line mass transit project while he has recruited 1,017 LASTMA officers to ease traffic flow. The State Government availed itself of the three modes of transportation of roads, rail, and waterways to boost public transportation in Lagos State.

Social Welfare Programs

The governor reached out to the people with various incentives to boost their standard of living, notable in this category is the payment of allowances of N40,000 monthly to 4000 unemployed graduates, including some direct gratification to widows. Grants have also been made available to business owners in the state to provide much-needed financial support and assistance to their various business enterprises, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which negatively impacted on many businesses including MSMEs as well as the nation’s economy.

MSME Programmes

In addition to the long line of achievements, Governor BAbajide Sanwo-Olu supported 3,673 businesses with N1.156 billion and a plethora of interventions including, grants, mentorship, business advisory, and capacity building as well as market access opportunities. He also Supported 1, 835 businesses with NGN939.97million and saved a total of 10,005 direct jobs and 40,020 indirect jobs via the MSME Recovery Fund, an intervention program to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and End SARS protests on businesses. Other programs carried out under this are;

  1. He introduced the Lagos Economic Acceleration Programme [LEAP] to reduce the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on small businesses.
  2. He initiated the N5 billion EduFund in partnership with First Bank and EdFin MFB.
  3. He set up a N1 billion fund targeted at businesses in the tourism, hospitality, entertainment, arts, and culture sectors – both loans and grants.
  4. He introduced a N1 billion Agriculture Value Chain Fund targeted at businesses that operate within the Agric value chain.
  5. He initiated the LSESP to address the labor skill gap and unemployment problems.
  6. He trained 5,908 and placed 706 in jobs in partnership with, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and United States African Development Fund (USADF), Microsoft, Coursera.
  7. He supported 152 businesses and persons in the tech ecosystem under the Lagos Innovate program.
  8. He issued 54 workspace vouchers under the workspace voucher program which targets early-stage start-ups.
  9. He trained 78 persons and placed 12 under the Talent Development Programme (TDP) a student loan program aimed at training young persons in tech skills and placing them in employment.

Tourism/Entertainment

In this aspect, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s disbursed N200million as loan to 37 Nigerian film makers. He completed and commissioned the New Glover Hall, Lagos. He was also in charge of the reconstruction of J.K Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture, Onikan, Lagos at an advanced stage of completion. In addition,he renovated 9 youth centres in Lagos Island, Badagry, Ikeja, Magodo, Abesan, Akowonjo, Ikorodu, Epe, and Isheri-Magodo. Several other immence contributions were made in the entertainment sector.
